In Kato Chorio, a small village near Ierapetra town in Crete, a two-floor old house exists on a plot of 650 sqm. The project involves the renovation of the old house, the addition of two new buildings with a pergola and a swimming pool. The existing building is 160 sqm and the new ones will be 80 sqm in total.
The overall design approach emphasises on the preservation of the primary architectural elements to achieve a harmonious integration between the new and existing structures.
The volumetric composition of the pergola and one of the new buildings, due to their height and proportions, relates to the volumetric configuration of the existing ground floor. The placement of the new buildings and pergolas creates a cohesive aesthetic, evoking the sense of a neighbourhood in the village. The choice of a single earth-toned colour for all external surfaces maintains simplicity and uniformity.
The conservation of existing architectural elements, such as the external staircase connecting the first floor to the exterior ground floor space, maintains the building’s original character. Also keeping most of the existing openings at the size they had is another repetitive element that keeps characteristics of the existing building. The preservation of specific volumetric elements, along with the organised layout of the design, creates spaces of enhanced functional quality.
In the new design, the eastern side serves as a pathway leading to the house, while the western side hosts activity areas, including the swimming pool and pergola. In this way, the volumetric arrangement of the existing building is utilised to provide privacy from the street.
Finally, the addition of the swimming pool is a key element of the design. Its simplicity and clean lines bring a sense of calm to the overall exterior layout. The pool’s design allows for a seating area surrounded by water, creating an open space with a view of the sky. Furthermore, the pool blends with the natural environment, with its simple form and colour complementing the tones of the surrounding olive trees.
