A bit further from the extension of the new city plan of Ierapetra, on a plot of 2.000 sqm were designed two identical villas with exterior spaces and pool, 100 sqm each.
The main factors influencing the design of the buildings and their layout on the plot were primarily the elongated shape of the land, the strong northern winds of the area, and the need for privacy, both between the buildings themselves and with neighbouring structures.
The form of the building consists of a continuous concrete structure framework, in white colour, lying on stonework, glass or vertical reed which respectively define the inside and the outside. The use of reed as the material of the horizontal shading surfaces between concrete beams enhances its role in defining the exterior areas. The continuity of the beams and the holistic approach of the skeleton make blurry boundaries between what is defined as interior and what as exterior.
The organisation of the interiors of each building and the large openings are designed to orient the spaces towards the olive grove and the pool, allowing every part of the residences to interact with the external environment. The “L” shaped geometry of the building embraces the exterior activities while it creates a barrier against the wind, featuring only small openings on the north side. This floor plan creates distance between the two bedrooms, offering privacy, with their isolated gardens.
The composition and the characteristics of stone work, concrete and the more fragile glass and reed create a very charming contrast between the materials. The natural curved shape of the reed fence that flows under the strict straight lines of the concrete skeleton, highlights the invasion of nature in a human-made structure.
The vertical reeds offer privacy, protect from the strong northern prevailing winds, define the entrance to the house and embrace the external spaces, choosing which part of the skeleton stays inside the courtyard and which outside.
