In a plot of 3.800sqm, next to the seaside village of Mochlos in Crete, were designed two independent villas for temporary habitation of 100 sqm each. The total size of the project is 200sqm.
The main factors that influence the design where the view to the sea, the slope of the plot and the strong northeast wind of the area.
The buildings were placed on the plot diagonally with the maximum allowed, by the building regulations, distance between them and designed with a linear organisation of the interior spaces. Hence, it is provided privacy and at the same time it is achieved access to the sea view from every room of the buildings.
The roofs of the buildings extend as louvres between horizontal and vertical structural elements in continuity with the building and define the exterior spaces. Thus, in combination with the continuous forged cement on the interior and exterior floors and the large openings, uncertain boundaries are created between inside and outside, giving a sense of freedom to the tenant while the swimming pool becomes one with the sea in front of his eyes. So, every activity that takes place in the interior follows a constant dialogue with the exterior environment.
One very important element of the design is the protected from the wind courtyard that each villa has. The openings at the south and north side of the living room of each building offer transparency, so the days when there are strong northeast winds, the tenants can enjoy the view of the sea from the protected courtyard between the building and the retaining wall.
Finally, the stone walls that define the interior spaces and organise the exterior protected courtyards, the timber pergolas and the earth colours of the forged cement and the coloured rough plaster blend in the building with the natural environment of the area, recalling memories of the traditional Cretan residence.
