Under Thrypti’s mountain foothills close to the village of Mirsini, a private residence of 145 sqm with a guest house of 45 sqm was designed on a sloping plot of 4.300 sqm.
The primary factors influencing the design of the buildings and their organisation on the plot were the western view towards the sea and the settlement of Mochlos, the strong northeastern winds in the area, and the plot’s slope.
The two buildings were positioned on the plot at the maximum distance from each other to ensure privacy and autonomy for the smaller guesthouse. The pool and central courtyard were placed between the two buildings to be easily accessible from both.
The courtyard sits parallel on the contour lines of the physical morphology of the ground, to respond to the slope of the plot. Large openings provide panoramic views from all the spaces of the main building as well as from the guesthouse.
Given the western orientation of the view, a system of vertical movable shading panels was designed to filter the western sun, but also have the flexibility to open throughout the day and night.
Lastly, the rough white plaster on the walls, defining the interior spaces of the buildings, and the reed as the shading material throughout the pergolas offer simplicity to the volumes and harmonise their integration into the natural environment of the area as a reference to the old houses of Mirsini.
