HOUSE OF 150 SQM | CRETE | GREECE

2024

SHARE PROJECT

A residence of 105 sqm with a 45 sqm guest house and a pool was designed in a challenging, steep, with amazing panoramic views, plot under the village of Tourloti.

The principal factors influencing the design of the building and its placement on the plot were the views of the sea and the olive grove, the slope of the terrain, the triangular shape of the plot and the strong northeastern winds in the area.
The building is organised with the main residence on the ground floor, and the guest house on the first floor.

The big openings towards the northeast offer a view of the sea and the mountains. However, the need for sunlight during the winter led to south openings towards a protected courtyard, where the entrance to the main house is. The protected veranda was designed at the south side of the living room, where on a windy day the owners can enjoy the sun while gazing at the wavy sea hitting the mountains through the transparent living room. Due to the steepness of the plot, there was a design philosophy of cours anglais to embrace secret gardens that you can see when you circulate in the house while the sun penetrates through them in the deeper parts of the building.

Also, there was an opportunity for individual entrance to the guest house from the back as the plot’s height level is the same as the upper floor.
The shallow part of the pool with the sunbeds next to the exterior living room is pulled back to be embraced by the shape of the building and merges creatively the activities inside and outside of the water. The pool runs parallel to the building as a safety zone towards the big height difference while the water connects to the sea view to become one entity in the eyes of the inhabitant.

Lastly, as a discreet design element, the thin metal structures that support reed surfaces integrate the various volumes of the building into one unit. They vary in size and proportions depending on their purpose while they keep their architectural language equivalent around the project. They become horizontal or vertical shading units and a filter of privacy from the neighbours.
